The Ancestry

Four generations ago our family made its great commitment to baking by opening a small bakery in Portland, OR. The year was 1910 and like so many people in America, our family emigrated from Europe in search of a better life.

The hours were long and the work was tough. Everything was done by hand, including mixing the dough. Warm bread was delivered each morning by horse and carriage.

The family paid extra for fresh quality ingredients, but that made a difference. Customers soon lined up for the old world flavors wafting from the little bakery shop on Stark Street.

In the heart of Cambria, California, in 1987, Elizabeth and Peter Bastasch began Elizabeth’s Food Company with a single, simple mission: to share their family’s generations-old baking traditions with the world. Their journey started humbly, crafting bagel chips in the basement of their home, where each batch was made by hand and infused with the same old-world care their ancestors brought to baking.

When Elizabeth and Peter decided to launch their own business, they were carrying forward this rich heritage. By 1987, they’d opened a modest facility in Paso Robles, and before long, local stores and major retailers like Price Club (now Costco) were stocking their products. From bagel chips, they soon added croutons and stuffing, capturing the attention of California’s food lovers and expanding their reach.

In 1992, Elizabeth’s Food Company became a trailblazer in the natural foods market as the first to offer certified organic croutons and stuffing. This was more than just a business move—it was a reflection of Elizabeth’s lifelong dedication to health, family, and the kind of food she wanted for her own children.
