The Story Behind the Label at Elizabeth’s Food Co.
The original label and logo of Elizabeth’s Food Co, depicts an image of a woman harvesting wheat against the backdrop of a vibrant Central California sunset. It’s more than just a logo; it’s a piece of our family’s history and the story of where it all began.
The label was created in 1987 by Jan French, a talented artist known for her ability to capture the beauty of California’s landscapes. My mom, Elizabeth, and dad, Peter, partnered with Jan to design something that would reflect not just their bakery’s roots in Cambria, California, but the heart and soul of their mission: wholesome, lovingly made food inspired by the land they loved.
Jan painted the woman as a symbol of strength, warmth, and tradition—values that define Elizabeth’s Food Co. The rolling foothills and dramatic sunset were inspired by the scenery of Central California, where my parents started their first bakery. The bold, earthy colors and timeless style make this label as much a piece of art as it is a piece of our brand.
I grew up with this image as a constant in our home, a reminder of my parents’ journey and the passion that built this company. Every time I see it, I think of my mom pulling freshly baked loaves from the oven and my dad dreaming up new recipes.
The label is a testament to where we’ve been and where we’re going. It reminds me that Elizabeth’s Food Co. is more than a business—it’s a family legacy rooted in hard work, artistry, and a deep connection to the land.
Thank you, Jan, for giving our company a face that tells our story so beautifully. It’s a piece of art we’re proud to carry forward.
With gratitude and love,
Maria Bastasch
